Students often complain they don't get a say when the school district makes decisions. That has all changed in Catoosa.
News on 6 Anchor Scott Thompson says Catoosa is adding a shot of youth to its school board.
Student voices are usually limited to student council and class officers. Now, Catoosa Public Schools will be the only district in the state, to add a student voice to the school board.
Starting Monday, Catoosa students will have one of their own standing up for the student perspective. Sophomore Jentri White was selected by school administrators to be the first student member of the Catoosa school board. She's no stranger to leadership. White has served as captain on her basketball and soccer teams. And she's also active in both the student council and the National Honor Society.
White says she's taking the job because she wants to represent her peers. “A lot of students have problems with how they run the school. But if you have a student actually in there. Then they understand a students helping in those decisions. It's not just run by adults."
Officially, Jentri White will be a student liaison, she can comment on board issues, but she can't vote.
