Wednesday, a fire at a midtown apartment complex killed 2 children. Five people were inside their Canyon Creek apartment at 51st and Lewis when the fire broke out around 1:30 in the afternoon.

As soon as firefighters arrived they knew they had a rescue operation on their hands. They formed two teams, one to pull out victims and the other to knock down the flames.

Witness, Mark Jacobs: “Just a lot of firemen rushing in, breaking down windows and doors. We heard people yelling that there was a couple, people inside.”

Crews rescued two women and two children; they were hospitalized with burns and smoke inhalation.

One boy, about 5-years old, was later pronounced dead. A 1-year old girl died inside the apartment. We don't know the other victims' conditions.

Investigators say the fire was an accident, but haven't said how it started. The victim’s names haven't been released.
