(Panama-AP) -- The 4-year-old son of an eastern Oklahoma police officer is recovering after accidentally shooting himself with his father's gun.

Dalton Emmert shot himself in the upper thigh with the 40-caliber Glock handgun of Panama Officer Jerimy Emmert. The boy is in traction for two weeks and will wear a half-body cast for at least five more weeks.

Panama Police Chief Greg Lynch says the boy somehow got his father's gun from the top of a refrigerator.

The LeFlore County town is just north of Poteau.
