Hundreds of Tulsans may have to go without a holiday meal this Thanksgiving. Earlier this week the News on 6 told you about the desperate need for turkeys at John 3:16 Mission.

It’s one of the area's largest homeless centers. After seeing our story, one man decided to do everything he could to help. Most of his life was spent in shelters and group homes, until an organization called "Independent Opportunities" helped him realize the dream of owning his own home.

Earl Snow, event participant: "I would like to give back to the community that helped me out. Sometimes it comes down to the hard times for the homeless and they really don't have nowhere to go for Thanksgiving."

Lisa LaTray with Independent Opportunities: "Earl and I talk a lot and we had both seen on the news on six that John 3:16 was a thousand turkeys short and we thought people are always helping us out, we're a non-profit and get donations why not take some of the luck we've had and help other people."

So they came up with the Tulsa Turkey challenge. For anyone who brings a frozen turkey to John 3:16 and mentions Independent Opportunities, the group will donate one to match, up to 500 turkeys.

To count toward the challenge, all donations must be made by Monday.
