(Oklahoma City-AP) -- Federal prosecutors in Oklahoma city helped send 59 defendants to prison in the past fiscal year on federal gun offenses. That's a six-year high.
Most of the convictions were on charges of felony firearm possession. A statute dating back to 1968 makes it a federal offense for a felon to possess a firearm.
U-S Attorney Robert McCampbell says prosecutors try to locate people responsible for many crimes and put them in prison to protect others.
The armed career criminal tag is attached to anyone who possesses a gun after three felony convictions.
In the past year, the local U-S attorney's office has won convictions against 10 such defendants who had a total of 120 convictions between them.
