(Edmond-AP) -- Oklahoma Public Safety Commissioner Bob Ricks was named Tuesday as the new Edmond police chief.

Ricks, who is also the state's director of homeland security, will take over the job October 20th.

Ricks is a former FBI agent and was the agency's spokesman and a negotiator during the government raid on the Branch Davidian compound in 1993. He headed the FBI's Oklahoma City office in 1995 when the federal building was bombed and was named public safety commissioner later that year by former Governor Frank Keating.

Ricks and Midwest City Police Chief Brandon Clabes were the finalists from 73 applicants to replace retiring Edmond Police Chief Dennis Cochran.
