(Oklahoma City-AP) -- The state Health Department has confirmed eight new human cases of the West Nile virus.

The number of Oklahomans with the disease has now surpassed that of 2002.

There have been 25 human cases of the virus reported this year with no deaths. Officials reported 21 cases last year with two deaths.

State public health veterinarian Doctor Kristy Bradley says Oklahoma is projected to have at least 100 cases of West Nile virus before the end of October.

Forty cases of the virus have been reported in Oklahoma's equine population, including four horses that died or were euthanized because of the virus.

Health officials have warned that people going outside should apply mosquito repellent containing deet.
