(Oklahoma City-AP) -- A new survey by the American Federation of Teachers says Oklahoma ranks 49th in the nation for teacher salaries.

The survey, released Wednesday, shows Oklahoma's average teacher salary for the 2001-2002 school year was $32,870. The national average was $44,367.

Only North Dakota and South Dakota ranked lower than Oklahoma. The survey included Washington, DC.

California ranked first with an average teacher salary of $54,348.

Other states in the region were Texas, which ranked 30th, New Mexico, which ranked 42nd, and Arkansas, which ranked 46th.
