WASHINGTON (AP) _ Maytag Corp. is recalling about 23,000 gas ranges for repair because they can experience flashback fires while igniting, posing burn and fire hazards to consumers.
The Newton, Iowa, company has received nine reports of flashback fires, including three in which consumers suffered minor burns or singed hair or clothing, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Thursday.
The recalled Maytag Gemini Gas Ranges are free standing, have separate upper and lower ovens and come in black, white, bisque or stainless finish. The ranges have model number MGR6772 and a serial number beginning with the letters AJ through AX or CA through CC.
The ranges were sold at retail appliance stores nationwide from July 2002 to February 2003 for between $1,300 and $1,500.
The government said consumers should stop using the upper oven self-clean and broil features immediately and should not use the upper oven at the same time as the lower oven. Consumers may continue using the lower oven, which is not affected by the recall.
Consumers can contact the company at 1-866-580-9177 to arrange a free in-home repair.
