(Oklahoma City-AP) -- Eighth-seeded California needed overtime today to hold off ninth-seeded North Carolina State in the first round of the N-C-A-A East Regional in Oklahoma City.
The Bears' Richard Midgely hit a three-point shot with three-point-nine seconds left in overtime to beat the Wolfpack 76-to-74.
Joe Shipp led California with 24 points. Marcus Melvin and Josh Powell each scored 17 for North Carolina State
California led 39-to-36 at halftime, the game was tied at 66 at the end of regulation.
The second game of the day features top-seeded and third-ranked Oklahoma against 16th-seeded South Carolina State.
West Regional games between Memphis and Arizona State, followed by Kansas-Utah State are tonight.
