OTTAWA (AP) _ Magnus Arvedson of Sweden scored at 2:24 of overtime, Thursday as the Ottawa Senators took the NHL points lead with a 3-2 victory over the Dallas Stars.

Heading into the game, the teams were tied in the race for the Presidents' Trophy with 86 points. The team with the most points at the end of the season is guaranteed home-ice advantage throughout the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Radek Bonk scored the other Ottawa goals. Bill Guerin and Jere Lehtinen countered for Dallas.

Rangers 4, Bruins 1

In New York, Ronald Petrovicky and Mark Messier had short-handed goals for as the New York Rangers beat Boston.

Pavel Bure and Alexei Kovalev also scored for New York, which pulled within four points of Boston for the eighth and final playoff spot in the East. The Bruins have a substantial games-in-hand edge of four, but are slumping.

P.J. Axelsson scored for the Bruins, winless in seven games (0-4-3).

Blue Jackets 3, Kings 1

In Columbus, Ohio, Ray Whitney broke out of a slump with three goals as the Blue Jackets defeated Los Angeles to end a six-game losing streak.

Marc Denis finished with 33 saves, most coming after Steve Heinze scored just 1:42 in.

It was Whitney's first hat trick in his 11 years in the NHL. He had scored two goals in a game 22 times.

Lightning 3, Panthers 1

In Tampa, Florida, Vincent Lecavalier had a goal and an assist, and Nikolai Khabibulin made 35 saves as Tampa Bay matched its point total (69) from all of last season in beating Florida.

Brad Richards and Vaclav Prospal _ who added an empty- net goal in the final 48.2 seconds _ also scored for the Lightning.

Jaroslav Bednar scored for Florida, which got 36 saves from Roberto Luongo.

Devils 3, Islanders 3

In Uniondale, New York, Jamie Langenbrunner was stopped by Rick DiPietro on a breakaway with 10 seconds left in overtime, then put a shot into the net right after time ran out as New Jersey settled for a 3-3 tie with the New York Islanders.

DiPietro, recalled from the minors earlier Thursday, made 30 saves.

Shawn Bates scored the tying goal with 8:46 remaining in regulation for the Islanders, who blew a two-goal lead.

Brad Isbister and Scatchard also had goals for New York. Scott Gomez, Jeff Friesen and John Madden scored for New Jersey.

Red Wings 7, Maple Leafs 2

In Detroit, Brett Hull had two goals and an assist, and surpassed 1,300 career points as Detroit routed Toronto.

The Red Wings won their seventh game in the last eight (7-0-0-1), while the Maple Leafs lost for only the third time in 14 games (11-3-0-0). The defeat also ended Toronto's seven-game road winning streak.

Henrik Zetterberg scored twice for Detroit. Darren McCarty and Kris Draper had a goal and an assist each, Dmitri Bykov got the other goal and Steve Yzerman added two assists, the first two points since his return from knee surgery.

Robert Reichel and Gary Roberts got the Toronto goals.

Wild 6, Canadiens 3

In Montreal, Cliff Ronning scored twice as Minnesota beat Montreal for its third straight win.

Wes Walz, Richard Park, Sergei Zholtok and Marian Gaborik also had goals for the Wild.

Montreal defenseman Craig Rivet had his first career two-goal game, and Richard Zednik also scored for the Canadiens, who lost their fifth straight (0-4-0-1).

Blues 4, Oilers 1

In St. Louis, Dallas Drake snapped a third-period tie and Pavol Demitra had three assists as St. Louis beat slumping Edmonton.

The Blues won without leading goal scorer, Keith Tkachuk _ who served the first of a four-game suspension for cross-checking Wes Walz of the Wild in the throat _ and with rookie Curtis Sanford in goal.

Steve Staios scored for the Oilers, 0-6-1-1 in their last eight games.

Justin Papineau had his first NHL goal for the Blues. Eric Boguinecki and Steve Martins also scored for St. Louis.

Flyers 5, Blackhawks 2

In Philadelphia, Todd Warriner had two goals and an assist, and Michal Handzus added a goal and three assists as Philadelphia beat Chicago.

Mark Bell scored twice for Chicago, which has lost five straight and eight of its past nine.

Mark Recchi and Kim Johnsson also scored for Philadelphia, which had three power-play goals for the first time this season.

Predators 6, Penguins 0

In Nashville, Tennessee, Tomas Vokoun got his second straight shutout and third this season, stopping 22 shots to give Nashville a win over Pittsburgh.

Greg Johnson scored a pair of goals and added an assist as the Predators _ 7-1 in their last eight games _ tied the franchise record with their sixth straight home victory.

Vladimir Orszagh, David Legwand, Adam Hall and Jon Sim also scored for Nashville.

Thrashers 4, Avalanche 3, OT

In Denver, Marc Savard scored 1:12 into overtime, and Dany Heatley had a goal and two assists as Atlanta beat coach Bob Hartley's beat Colorado team.

Hartley got a win in his first trip back to Denver since being fired by the Avalanche on Dec. 18. He led Colorado on four straight trips to the conference finals and the 2001 Stanley Cup title.

Savard scored the winner, his 10th goal of the season, on a shot from the top of the left circle that clanged in off the goalpost.

Jeff Odgers and Vyacheslav Kozlov also scored against Colorado's Patrick Roy.

Joe Sakic, Milan Hejduk and Derek Morris beat Atlanta's Milan Hnilicka.

Sharks 3, Canucks 2

In Vancouver, British Columbia, Owen Nolan and Vincent Damphousse had a goal and an assist each as San Jose snapped Vancouver's NHL-best 14-game unbeaten streak.

Patrick Marleau also scored, and Evgeni Nabokov made 23 saves for the Sharks, who have won three consecutive games for just the second time all season.

Marek Malik and Henrik Sedin scored for the Canucks in the third period, but it wasn't enough to keep Vancouver from losing its first game since Jan. 24.

The loss might have been especially costly for the Canucks, who started without No.1 goaltender Dan Cloutier (sprained knee) and finished without Todd Bertuzzi and Mattias Ohlund.
