(Miami-AP) -- The Army Corps of Engineers is looking for ways to prevent flooding of the Spring River and Tar Creek in northeastern Oklahoma.
Flooding of the two rivers has caused damage to the towns of Picher and Cardin in recent years.
Engineers met with local government and tribal leaders in Ottawa County to discuss an ongoing study of the area.
Officials hope the study will provide a comprehensive solution to environmental and flood control problems.
A draft of the report says problems caused by environmental damage from abandoned mines and flooding along Tar Creek are related and can be solved with a comprehensive plan.
Possible outcomes of the study include building a series of levees and water storage areas in northern Ottawa County to prevent flood damage.
