Tulsa mayor Bill LaFortune says Tulsa is ready to fight the war on terror. Bill LaFortune and members of his Homeland Security Task Force laid out details for protection from the local front line. News on Six Reporter Patrina Adger has the story.
"We are prepared, we are vigilant, we have collaborated, and we have planned." And they are ready. The mayor's Homeland Security Task Force made up emergency management and public works personnel are working together to protect the home front.
Each department laid out detailed plans of what they will be called to do if the country elevates to a red alert status, a severe risk of a terrorist attack. "The biggest thing you will see in a red alert is an increase in security measures throughout the city. One of the biggest threats is to the public government building and trying to disrupt government that's something we have already looked at and planned for."
County and city police officers have already stepped up security around city hall and government offices. And Public Works has beefed up security around water and sewer plant facilities. Mayor LaFortune has also created the Mayor Citizen Corp, where ordinary people are trained in basic police and medical duties to become volunteer first responders, to free up other first responders for frontline duty.
Mayor LaFortune say the best thing to do is be prepared, don't panic. Just because we're in high alert status now, doesn't mean everyone needs to duct tape all the windows and doors in their home. "Don't be afraid! Tulsa is well ahead of the fame as far as disaster and terrorism preparedness is concerned."
The mayor also says you can pickup a Family Preparedness Guide at all Quik Trips and city-county libraries starting Thursday.
