NORMAN, Okla. (AP) _ Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops announced the hiring Thursday of Kevin Sumlin as tight ends coach.

Sumlin spent the past two years at Texas A&M as assistant head coach and receivers coach. He served as the Aggies' offensive coordinator in the final nine games of 2002.

Sumlin had been on the staff at Colorado for the past month. He replaces Jonathan Hayes, who resigned in January for a job with the Cincinnati Bengals of the NFL.

``Kevin has a great coaching background. He has experienced success everywhere he's been and was particularly effective as offensive coordinator at Texas A&M,'' said Stoops, who will assume the special teams duties previously performed by Hayes.

``He did an exceptional job last season and made quite an impact on the Big 12 Conference. We're happy that we can add his expertise to our program.''

Sumlin became A&M's offensive coordinator when then-coach R.C. Slocum shook up his staff after the third game. The Aggies averaged 33 points per game with Sumlin calling the plays, after averaging 16 points in the first three games.

Sumlin, 38, began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Washington State. He went on to jobs at Wyoming, Minnesota and Purdue before being hired by A&M.
