(Enid-AP) -- A retired Enid veterinarian is free on 170-thousand-dollars bond after appearing in court on 17 counts of animal cruelty.

Jess Brewer surrendered to authorities Thursday to face charges alleging he allowed 17 horses to starve in a pasture near Lacey.

A Kingfisher County sheriff's deputy found more than 100 malnourished horses in November in a pasture about ten miles west of Hennessey.

More than 20 horses were dead and two more horses died after the herd was moved to a nearby ranch.

The 100 surviving horses were moved this month to a 200-acre ranch in Canadian County.

Six others are being housed by a Lahoma veterinarian because they were in worse condition than the others.

Autopsies confirmed 17 horses died of starvation.
