(Newkirk-AP) -- A jury in Kay County has recommended a death sentence for a man convicted of killing his girlfriend's mother.

Brian Davis of Ponca City was convicted last week of first-degree rape and murder. The jury recommended the death sentence Tuesday night.

Davis was found guilty of killing Josephine Sanford in November 2001.

Sanford was stabbed to death in the Ponca City apartment that Davis shared with Sanford's daughter.

Formal sentencing is set for March 7th.
