Witnesses say an exploding electrical transformer sparked a fire that swept through a Sperry salvage yard Thursday morning.
It was Roger Figuerido's workshop that went up first. "I had about 30 antique cars in there from the 50's, probably from the 50's to the 60's, very expensive cars and I lost all of them." Neighbors say they heard popping noises, and then saw sparks falling from this PSO transformer onto Figuerido's building.
After the building burned to the ground, the flames spread to the surrounding salvage yard, blackening three of its five acres. The Sperry Fire Department was at a disadvantage from the outset. The fire department also had to truck all its water to the scene.
Firefighters eventually got things under control, but that's little consolation to Roger Figuerido. "How am I ever going to recover from all this, I had no insurance on it, I mean we're talkin' about a lot of money in cars I lost."
No one was injured
