A Whirlpool Corp. plant in Tulsa that produces gas and electric ranges will add 200 jobs when the company closes its Quebec plant in two years.

The Tulsa plant now employs about 1,500 people, spokesman Tom Kline said. New hires will be drawn from the Tulsa area, he said.

Tulsa voters approved a half-penny sales tax in 1994 to raise about $26 million for the manufacturing plant, which was built for about $100 million.

The plant survived a major job cut in January 2001 while other Whirlpool plants lost hundreds of employees.

The move from Canada is scheduled to take place in 2004 as part of Whirlpool's previously announced global restructuring initiative, said Al Holaday, vice president of North American manufacturing operations.
