A dog in Madison, Maine is recovering this morning after being snatched by a bald eagle and then dropped 40 feet to the ground below.

4-year-old "Ava" was in her backyard when the eagle grabbed her. Her owner saw the whole thing and is amazed his little companion survived.

He says he's even more amazed by the outpouring of support - from cards and donations to help pay for her medical care to constant calls from network news organizations anxious to talk with the family.

The little dog suffered deep puncture wounds from the eagle's talons, as well as injuries from the fall. Veterinarians say following surgery she should be home in less than 2 weeks.
