(Tulsa-AP) -- The Tulsa Golden Hurricane is picked to finish third in the Western Athletic Conference in a pre-season poll of league basketball coaches.

The ten WAC coaches picked Fresno State, last year's regular season champ, to win the conference. Hawaii is expected to finish second.

Last season, Hawaii beat Tulsa in the WAC tournament championship to advance to the N-C-double-A tourney. Tulsa settled for the National Invitation Tournament and won the N-I-T title.

Coaches picked Fresno's Melvin Ely as the pre-season player of the year. Ely was the player of the year last season.

TU's Kevin Johnson was named to the pre-season all-conference team. Johnson led Tulsa in scoring and rebounding.
