(Davie, Florida-AP) -- Josh Heupel won't be wearing a Miami Dolphins uniform this season.

The Dolphins waived Heupel Tuesday. A sixth-round draft pick from national champion Oklahoma, Heupel hasn't practiced since spraining his left wrist on August 6th against the St. Louis Rams in the Hall of Fame game.

Because of the injury, Heupel could return to the Dolphins and be placed on injured reserve if he clears waivers. Even then, Miami likely would waive Heupel once he's healthy.

Coach Dave Wannstedt says the left-hander should get another chance in the NFL.

Wannstedt says there's a lot of people who liked Heupel going into the draft. He says Heupel never really got an opportunity to show what he might be able to do.

Heupel set records at OU for career completions (590), attempts (933) and touchdown passes (50).
