(OKLAHOMA CITY) - A new program will target 100 Pottawatomie County families affected by substance abuse.
Gov. Frank Keating and former U.S. Health, Education and Welfare Secretary Joseph Califano announced the program Tuesday.
Califano said the program will be headquartered in Shawnee and will bring together institutions and agencies that work with abused and neglected children. He said similar projects are planned in Phoenix, Ariz., and New York.
Keating praised the project and said Oklahoma's social problems contribute to the state's low ranking in income.
Califano is the chairman of the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, based at Columbia University.
