OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ Tom Boettcher, a Tulsa attorney, is forming a committee to explore running for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate in 2002.

Boettcher manages the Tulsa office of Boettcher, Ryan and Martin.

He is the author of two books, one on the Vietnam War and another about President Harry Truman and the military during the early days of the Cold War.

He said several Democrats have encouraged him to run because they don't want former Gov. David Walters to be the Democratic nominee.

``They think he forfeited any opportunity for public office when he got in legal trouble while governor,'' Boettcher said.

Walters pleaded guilty to a campaign law violation near the end of his term.

Boettcher was editor and publisher of two magazines.

He is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy and a veteran of the Vietnam War.

His wife, Pam, is a former CNN White House correspondent. They have two daughters.
