OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) _ A 12-year-old boy who was pulled by beachgoers from a sand dune that collapsed on top of him has died.
Michael Newell of Cameron Park had been playing with a friend Friday around the dunes near Dillon Beach, about 60 miles northwest of San Francisco.
Newell was inside a hole they had dug in the dune when it collapsed, said Capt. Ken Carter of the Marin County Fire Department.
``He was completely buried for five to six minutes,'' paramedic Ron Alves said.
Beachgoers pulled out the unconscious boy, and paramedics were able to revive him before loading him onto a helicopter. He died at a hospital Sunday.
