LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) _ Telecommunications company Alltel Corp. has struck an $8 million sponsorship deal with University of Nebraska athletics.

The eight-year deal would be the largest sponsorship package the department has had with a single company, said Gary Fouraker, associate athletic director for business and finance.

The agreement must be approved by the university's Board of Regents, which is scheduled to take action on the proposal July 28 in McCook.

Alltel would be the only telecommunications company allowed to advertise at Memorial Stadium, the Bob Devaney Sports Center and a softball field being built as part of the new Haymarket Park baseball complex, Fouraker said Saturday.

Alltel also would be able to use Husker logos as part of its advertising.

The money would be used to support all sports programs, with an emphasis on paying for the building of Haymarket Park, Fouraker said.

The money would not mean Nebraska would restore men's swimming and diving, a program that was cut from the budget in March, he said.
