It's a parent's worst nightmare, a school shooting. But the job of authorities is to prepare for such situations.
Broken Arrow Police Department Wednesday practiced a school shooting scenario at South Intermediate High School. Department heads created the situation based on actual events from previous school shootings. The department is using pyrotechnics and special effects to make the scenario as realistic as possible. Students are playing the part of victims and shooters. Special Operations teams got into the school through doors and windows while hostage negotiators practiced working to release captives.
BA Police Lt. Kevin Marks, "We must be prepared to deal with these situations. These situations know no boundaries. They can occur in the inner city or in suburban areas, they can occur in rural areas." After the drill, officers talked about what they did right and what they need to work on.
