(Tulsa-AP) -- The greens of Southern Hills Country Club drew the ire of many players earlier this week.

But after playing Thursday, most players gave the greens a passing grade.

Phil Mickelson says all the golfers knew the U-S Open officials would slow the greens down and they did.

Hale Irwin made a two-putt par on the super-slick ninth hole, and took away any concerns about the slope and speed of 18 by knocking his approach inside two feet for a birdie.

Irwin says the greens are of sufficient speed to be manageable.
