The battle over this summer's heat is underway. KOTV's Donn Robertson says there are some volunteers are trying to cool down Tulsans.
The summer sun is already out in full force. Local resident Vessie Conley says, "In the morning it is OK. But up in the day, that humidity is something else." A Tulsa Weather Coalition volunteer, Cassaundra Henderson, "We are here to install the air conditioner." So an army of volunteers hit the streets in the morning to combat the heat. "I've already walked in this house and it is hot in there right now." Those volunteers spread out through town, delivering and installing more than 50 air conditioners to people who need relief from the heat. Another volunteer, Brian Best "So what is it going to be a week, two weeks from now, putting in air conditioners is going to save a life or two." Vessie Conley has scholiasts, a replaced hip and no air conditioning, this is the third year she's signed up for the Weather Coalition's program. "Being 80 years of age, I need the air." The Conley's consider volunteers in their home payback, Vessie's husband is a retired minister, and they spent much of their lives helping others. "It is just like the bible says, whatever you do, it will come back to you, good or bad deeds and all."
Henderson says "You all have a great weekend." A good deed to help people fight Oklahoma's heat. You can call the Weather Coalition if you know someone with an illness that needs an air conditioner. The non-profit agency also wants to buy more air conditioners. Their number is 834-2665.
