(Calera-AP) -- Calera voters will decide whether town police can continue using a shipping container as a holding cell for minor offenders.
Ex-Mayor James Eaton says if inmates aren't crazy when they go into that cell, they'll be crazy by the time they leave. Residents say it looks like a stained boxcar left in front of the town's only mural.
Police Captain John Polston says it's a way to keep from paying fees to the Bryan County sheriff's office for taking up jail space. Polston says that saved money will keep the town's police dispatch system running.
Calera Mayor Randy Self says the Bryan County jail is not a safe place to send town prisoners and says two inmates recently escaped. Self also says Calera can make money by charging city prisoners.
