Tulsa Bishop Edward Slattery released a statement in light of Friday's resignation by Archbishop Bernard Law.

In it, he says, "the safety of our children must come first; and the way we exercise leadership in the church or anywhere else must be with a spirit of openness and transparency so that everyone will know we are deserving of their trust."

Bishop Slattery added that Friday's resignation sends an important message to anyone in a position of authority.
