(Ann Arbor, Michigan-AP) -- Oklahoma and several other states want the US Supreme Court to decide a University of Michigan Law School admissions case over affirmative action.

The attorneys general of eleven states filed a friend-of-the court brief asking the high court to settle conflicting rulings among lower courts.

They want to know whether and to what degree a prospective student's race may be used by colleges trying to create a diverse student body.

The conflicting decisions are in the way judges interpret a 1978 Supreme Court opinion that allows colleges to use race as a factor in admitting students.
