BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) _ Bob Knight, the volatile basketball coach who was fired from Indiana University for grabbing a student, has sued the school over his dismissal.
The lawsuit, filed in the Monroe County Circuit Court on Friday, claims Knight lost more than $2 million because of termination. It also says he was fired without cause, without a proper meeting of university trustees and without a chance to defend himself.
The school denied the allegations.
``The university has fulfilled all of its obligations under the contract it had with Mr. Knight. Indiana University will defend its interests vigorously,'' the school said in a statement released Tuesday.
Knight, who led Indiana to three national championships, was fired in 2000 after he grabbed a student he considered disrespectful. Indiana University officials said it was a violation of a ``zero tolerance'' behavior policy set up for the coach.
Knight is now the men's basketball coach at Texas Tech University.
Negotiations over his dismissal collapsed last week. Attorneys have said a key issue in the talks is whether Indiana should pay Knight for lost income.
Russell Yates, Knight's attorney, has said the coach probably lost $3 million in salary and outside income due to his firing.
