The price you pay for utility bills could be going up. You can thank the federal and state governments.

The City of Tulsa will be required to spend $125-million over the next five years. The money will go toward improving sewage treatment facilities, mainly at the Southside plant.

The federal government is requiring cities to put tighter controls on the amount of solid sewage allowed to flow into rivers and streams. Tulsa Mayor Bill Lafortune says despite the mandates, he's trying to keep his campaign promise of steady rates for the city's services. "And the good news is again, in terms of water and of trash we do not see any need for a rate increase in water over at least the next two years if not longer."

LaFortune says his staff is still trying to find ways to minimize sewage rate increases.
