(Oklahoma City-AP) -- More than 200,000 Oklahomans signed up for the state's no-call telemarketing registry during its first week.

Attorney General Drew Edmondson says his office prepared for a heavy volume, but the number is beyond his expectations.

Many telemarketers are prohibited from calling those whose names are on the list. The program goes into effect January first and telemarketers will have 30 days to stop calling those on the registry.

Edmondson says residents have until December first to get their names on the first list.

Charitable, political and nonprofit groups are exempt from the list, as are businesses calling to set up a face-to-face meeting.

There is no charge for registration and residents can put their names on the list online at the attorney general's Web site, by phone or by mail.
