(Burns Flat-AP) -- Oklahoma could be on track to become the first inland site of a spaceport.

The proposed site is located at the Clinton-Sherman Airpark in western Oklahoma. The former Air Force Base has the fourth-longest runway in the nation.

A 600-thousand dollar environmental impact study is being done to test the feasibility of the plan.

The site would be used to launch small, low-orbit satellites for communication, Earth imaging, and space tourism.

Meetings in Burns Flat and Oklahoma City are scheduled in October for residents to voice their opinions on the proposed spaceport.
