OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ The Muscogee Creek Nation of Oklahoma is receiving $17 million in federal funds to promote affordable housing and help families in need, the Department of Housing and Urban Development announced Monday.

The $17,247,188 is being provided through HUD's Indian Housing Block Grant program.

``These grants do so much good for so many people,'' said HUD Secretary Mel Martinez. ``This money helps Native American communities do the critical work of providing affordable housing for those who need it most.''

The tribe, based in Okmulgee, will determine how best to use the funds. Tribal officials did not immediately return phone calls from The Associated Press seeking comment.
