Dodgers Acquire Cabrera From Indians

LOS ANGELES (AP) _ The Los Angeles Dodgers, who scored only 27 runs during an 11-game homestand, acquired infielder-outfielder Jolbert Cabrera from the Cleveland Indians on Monday for minor league left-hander Lance Caraccioli.

Cabrera appeared in 38 games for the Indians this season, hitting .111 with seven RBIs. He was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo of the International League on July 12, where he had 26 hits in 91 at-bats for a .286 average with seven RBIs.

``We very much like the versatility of Jolbert,'' Dodgers general manager Dan Evans said. ``He is a solid defender that can play any infield position along with all of the outfield positions. He adds much depth to our organization.''

The Dodgers entered Monday night's game at San Diego having lost 10 of 12 games, but with a 56-43 record, they trailed the NL West-leading Arizona Diamondbacks by only 1 1/2 games.

No decision was immediately announced concerning where the 29-year-old Cabrera will report.

Cabrera played at six positions with the Indians while appearing in 141 games during the 2001 season, when he hit .261 with 16 doubles, three triples, one homer, 38 RBIs and 10 stolen bases. He hit .251 with two homers and 15 RBIs in 100 games in 2000.

Cabrera was shot in the right buttocks during an attempted carjacking in his home town of Cartagena, Colombia last Dec. 21.

At spring training, Cabrera displayed a 6-inch scar along the outside of his right leg where doctors operated three days after he was shot to remove the bullet.

The Indians have been busy in the trade market recently, sending right-hander Bartolo Colon to Montreal late last month and Chuck Finley to St. Louis over the weekend.

Idle Monday, the Indians have a 43-55 record and trail the AL Central Division-leading Minnesota Twins by 15 games.

The 24-year-old Caraccioli appeared in 10 games for Triple-A Las Vegas of the Pacific Coast League, going 4-3 with a 4.14 ERA.

Originally drafted in the 10th round in 1998, Caraccioli was promoted from Double-A Jacksonville of the Southern League, where he went 4-2 with a 3.06 ERA and 48 strikeouts.
