(Oklahoma City-AP) -- State Health Department officials say new rules on public smoking won't turn health inspectors into tobacco police.

Doug Matheny of the agency says inspectors will rely on public complaints to enforce the restrictions.

Restaurants that seat fewer than 50 will have to ban smoking or provide a separately ventilated area.

Larger restaurants along with taverns and clubs can have separate areas, prohibit smoking or operate without a nonsmoking area.

The Health Department restrictions must still be signed by Governor Keating. The agency hopes to put them in place next month.
