NEW YORK (AP) _ IBM reportedly is about to cut its work force by about 2 1/2 percent.

The Wall Street Journal cites a knowledgeable source as saying the computer maker will eliminate up to 8,000 jobs in the current quarter.

It would be Big Blue's largest personnel reduction since the early 1990's.

The Journal says the move is a further sign that IBM is less able to withstand the current slowdown in technology spending than it had once appeared.

An IBM spokesman declined to comment on the Journal's story.
