ALEXANDRIA, La. (AP) _ The few fans who showed up to watch the Louisiana Rangers indoor football team take on Lake Charles got to see two sports for the price of one when the Rangers' co-owners ended up in a boxing match after the game.
Rangers co-owners Jim Goodman and Roy Reap were arrested along with three others for fighting after Louisiana's Scott Pepperman missed a game-tying field goal with 11 seconds left in a 41-38 loss to Lake Charles.
Reap, the team's president, was arrested for simple battery and disturbing the peace by fighting. Goodman, the team's coach and one of four co-owners, was arrested for disturbing the peace by fighting. Jeanie Goodman, his wife, John Reap, Roy Reap's son, and Edna Welch were all also arrested.
The altercation apparently stemmed from an incident late in the fourth quarter, police said, when Roy Reap took a ball that landed in the stands away from a child who had picked it up.
Jeanie Goodman, sitting nearby, then gave the child another football, which Reap also took away, an act that apparently caused the melee 20 minutes after the game.
Speaking before the fight began, Jim Goodman said he was disappointed in the low attendance at the game, estimated at about 500.
``I really don't know what to do,'' said Goodman. ``This game was all over television and all over (the newspaper). We put up fliers, it was all over the place ... Maybe we should just give up the Aces and give up Rangers football and see what people want to do on the weekend.''
