Kids at one Tulsa Elementary school are doing their part to help keep area swimming pools open this summer.

Mayor Bill LaFortune has asked all Tulsans to donate one dollar to keep the pools open. Monday morning he stopped by Emerson Elementary where the students kicked off their own fundraiser called "Pools for Kids."

They've challenged all Tulsa Public Schools to donate money too. The mayor says he proud of the effort these young students are making. Every 15 or 20 dollars you raise means one of you get to swim in one of our pools this summer. Isn't that exciting. And that kids could be you."

Mayor LaFortune donated the first $10. That will be added to money already raised over the weekend to keep all 13 pools open.

$300,000 is needed, and half has been raised so far. The pools were scheduled to close because of cost cutting measures resulting from the city budget shortfall.
