Kandace Krueger, a 24-year-old journalism student at Texas A&M University, was crowned Miss USA 2001 on Friday night in Gary, Ind. When host William Shatner announced her as the winner, Ms. Krueger covered her face with her hands while reigning Miss USA Lynnette Cole put a sash on her, handed her a bouquet of flowers and placed a tiara on her head.

She is the eighth Miss Texas to win the Miss USA crown, the most of any state in the pageant's 50 years.

With Ms. Krueger winning the Miss USA title, first runner-up Miss Permian Basin, Mandy Jeffreys , will take over the role of Miss Texas USA.

Liane Angus of the District of Columbia was first runner-up, followed by Tiffany Fallon of Georgia.
