(Verdigris-AP) -- Officials in one the state's smallest and youngest communities are asking voters for a two cent sales tax.

The vote in Verdigris will be held under the seldom used Town Meeting Act. Registered voters are to gather in the local school cafeteria beginning at 7 tonight and will be given ballots.

The Rogers County town of about 350 was organized in 1980 about six miles south of Claremore on historic Route 66.

City officials say they'll use proceeds from the tax for capital improvements and operations.

Town clerk Susan Beck says there's just one retail business in the town, but says the tax will provide a way to establish a structure for future improvements.
