(Tulsa-AP) -- At least one group of college graduates has no worries about finding that first job.

Nurses are in high demand and short supply, not only in Oklahoma but across the country as well.

The University of Tulsa had 80 nursing students enrolled during the fall semester, down from 100 a year ago and well below the record of 315 in 1978.

Oral Roberts and Tulsa Community College report similar declines.

Meanwhile, hospitals are seeking more nurses and health officials say the need will increase as the baby boomer generation begins retiring.

Health professionals say the falling number of nurses is due to many factors. In the past most females became either a nurse or teacher. Now women have new career options in business, technology and other fields.

Those that do choose nursing also can choose between hospitals, H-M-O's, home health agencies and other health related fields.
