FEATS OF THE WEEK

No. 1-ranked Concord, Calif., De La Salle, assured itself of the school's third National Prep Poll final No. 1-ranking by finishing the season a perfect 13-0 and winning its ninth straight North Coast Section Class 4A title and 14th overall. The Spartans, who have now won a national-record 113 consecutive games, easily dispatched of San Leandro, 49-13. Senior running back Kevin Simon had 144 yards on 11 carries and scored two touchdowns . . . Tyler Ebell of Ventura, Calif., continued his assault on the record books, breaking the national mark for single-season rushing yards with 4,206. Ebell, a senior who broke the state record last week, gained 307 yards against Lompoc in a Southern Section Division IV semifinal game, a 34-21 win for Ventura. Travis Henry of Frostproof, Fla., set the previous record of 4,087 yards during the 1996 season . . . A crowd of 14,267 watched as regionally ranked Kahuku, Hawaii, ended the 14-year state-title rein of then-No. 9 Honolulu, St. Louis, 26-20. Running backs Mulivai Pula and Marcus Salanoa scored two touchdowns apiece for the victorious Red Raiders . . . No. 11 Columbus, Ohio, Upper Arlington used a stellar effort from Ohio Mr. Football Jeff Backes to defeat No. 18 Solon, 15-9, for its first-ever Division I state championship. Backes, who rushed for a state-record 3,353 yards this season, gained 183 yards and two touchdowns and helped secure the win by intercepting a Solon pass on the goal line with 46 seconds left in the game.
