The Oklahoma towns of Pitcher and Cardin may have to pack up and move.
That's what an environmental task force is recommending. The U.S. Corps of Engineers plan calls for the government to buy out almost 8,000 homes in the Tar Creek area.
It's a former mining site that is on an environmental clean-up list. The Corps wants to turn it into a 2,000-acre natural wetland.
The Ottawa County towns held a meeting Thursday night. And some residents say they don't want to go. Resident Ellen Clogston, "I’ve lived here 56 years and I have no concerns about health problems. Only thing I'm concerned about is emotional problems. Being moved out of the home that I’ve lived in."
The project would take 10 years and cost $250,000,000.
