The Oklahoma Historical Society, the Oklahoma Centennial Commission, and Hideaway Pizza will co-sponsor Collage 2001 Oklahoma Centennial Project. This year's theme is entitled "Indians and Pioneers: The First People of the Land." The collage program is a seven-year project that will create a unique collection of historic art celebrating Oklahoma's centennial year of statehood. Each year a different theme is selected for the collages, collectively covering every aspect of life in Oklahoma.
"The collage project is a historic art event for our state and will help mark the changing of centuries," said OHS staff member Bruce Joseph. "Like community quilting, this art form is created by the people and for the people. The creation of these collages will be an educational, reflective, and bonding experience for the participants, whether they are senior citizens, school children, or just neighbors."
Collages may be submitted by any person, group, school, or business in Oklahoma. Participants must register no later than February 1, 2001. Participants must submit the following information:
Group or individual's name • Complete address, city, state, zip • Contact person with day and night phone numbers • E-mail address • Brief statement (50 words or less) about you or your group and your concept for the collage.
"Once registration information is submitted, participants will receive detailed instructions on creating a collage, collage requirements, important dates, and drop off locations," said Joseph. Registrations should be mailed to Centennial Collage Project, c/o Hideaway Pizza, 6616 N.Western Avenue, Oklahoma City, 73116.
Collages and accompanying essays will be judged, and a total of $10.000 in cash awards will be awarded for top finishers in each category. At the sponsor’s discretion, collages will be selected for inclusion in a touring exhibition that will displayed at various venues and events around the state throughout 2001. In 2007 the best collages will be displayed at the National Mall in Washington. D. C.
