Oklahoma's quarterback, coach, honored

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) _ The Walter Camp Football Foundation awarded its player of the year trophy Tuesday to top-ranked Oklahoma's quarterback Josh Heupel and its coach of the year award to the Sooners' Bob Stoops.

Heupel, who has the best passing completion percentage (65.81) among the top 50 Division I-A quarterbacks, led his team to an 11-0 record. In only his second year at Oklahoma, Stoops took his team to the top national ranking for the first time since 1987.

The Walter Camp organization annually picks an All-American team and selects winners of individual honors. This year marked only the third time in 34 years that a player and a coach from the same school were honored in the same year.

The winner of the Walter Camp trophy, named for the former Yale coach who helped develop the rules of the game, has gone on to win the Heisman Trophy 28 times since it was first awarded in 1967.

Stoops and Heupel will be formally honored at the Walter Camp 34th national awards banquet on Feb. 10 at the Yale University Commons in New Haven.
