After weeks of confusing information about the availability of vaccines, the flu has officially arrived in Oklahoma. Some medical experts are saying this flu season may be tougher than most.
It's that time of year. The time for long lines at busy shopping centers. But why are people lined up outside of Wal-Mart? Teresa Johnston brought her parents to the American Lung Association's Care-A-Van for on-site flu shots, because their doctor didn't have vaccines yet. "And he said it just wasn't available, they didn't have it,†said Norma Johnston. “But we did get a letter that they will have it the 29th, but that gives you two more days to possibly take the flu. So when we heard this we decided that this was a good deal, even if we had to wait." A
The flu is not just a bad cold. It's a serious illness with complications that kill an estimated 45,000 Americans each year. For some of us, an annual flu shot can be a lifesaver. “For someone like me or you, a healthy adult, we might be just bedridden for a week where we ache all over and can't really move,†said American Lung Association spokeman Darla Akin. “Someone who is 65 or older, it will turn into pneumonia, other diseases, other illnesses, and they could die easily."
Also at risk, people with heart or lung disorders, compromised immune systems and anyone being treated for cancer, diabetics, and some pregnant women. Johnston knows how serious the flu can be. So she's not taking any chances. "My parents, they're special,†she said. “I want to take care of them as much as I can."
Tuesday, the American Lung Association's Care-A-Van will be at the Wal-Mart at 81st Street and Lewis Avenue from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM giving flu shots.
The Tulsa County Health Department is also giving shots this week at the Tulsa Fairgrounds Cafeteria. Through Thursday, flu and pneumonia shots will be available from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. And Friday from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM.
