(Durant-AP) -- Southeastern Oklahoma football coach Morris Sloan is resigning after 12 years at the school.
School officials say Sloan's resignation will be effective on December 31st.
Sloan says he wants to spend more time with his recently widowed mother, and that he decided to resign before the season started.
Sloan says he told his players of his decision after the second game of the season.
Sloan's teams compiled nine winning seasons during his dozen years as coach, and he is the winningest coach in Southeastern history with a career record of 65-53-and four.
The Savages won Oklahoma Intercollegiate Conference titles in 1989 and 1994 and a share of the Lone Star Conference title in 1999.
